Superhumps, Magnetic Fields and the Mass-ratio in AM Canum Venaticorum

چکیده

We show that the observed K velocities and periodicities of AM CVn can be reconciled given a mass ratio q ≈ 0.22 and a secondary star with a modest magnetic field of surface strength B ∼ 1 T. We see that the new mass ratio implies that the secondary is most likely semi-degenerate. The effect of the field on the accretion disc structure is examined. The theory of precessing discs and resonant orbits is generalised to encompass higher order resonances than 3:2 and shown to retain consistency with the new mass ratio.

Two new AM Canum Venaticorum binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III

The AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) binaries are a rare group of ultra-short period, masstransferring white dwarf binaries, some of which may be Type Ia supernova progenitors. More than a third of the total known population of AM CVn binaries have been discovered via the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Here, we discuss our search for new AM CVns in the SDSS spectroscopic data base, and present t...

Constraining the Physics of Am Canum Venaticorum Systems with the Accretion Disk Instability Model

Recent work by Levitan et al has expanded the long–term photometric database for AM CVn stars. In particular, their outburst properties are well–correlated with orbital period, and allow constraints to be placed on the secular mass transfer rate between secondary and primary if one adopts the disk instability model for the outbursts. We use the observed range of outbursting behavior for AM CVn ...

Kinematics of the ultra-compact helium accretor AM Canum Venaticorum

We report on the results from a five-night campaign of high-speed spectroscopy of the 17-minute binary AM Canum Venaticorum, obtained with the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope on La Palma. We detect a kinematic feature that appears to be entirely analogous to the ‘central spike’ known from the long-period, emission-line AM CVn stars GP Com, V396 Hya and SDSS J124058.03−015919.2, which has been ...

Accretion disc models for AM Canum Venaticorum systems

Using a model of the vertical structure of accretion discs, we calculate disc spectra across a range of system parameters for the helium-rich AM CVn cataclysmic variables, and investigate thermal instabilities in their discs. Applying a χ2-minimisation technique, predicted HeI and HI continuum and line profiles are compared with those observed for two such systems, AM CVn and CR Boo, to estimat...

Are superflares on solar analogues caused by extra-solar planets?

Stellar flares with 10 − 10 times more energy than the largest solar flare have been detected from 9 normal F and G main sequence stars (Schaefer, King & Deliyannis 1999). These superflares have durations of hours to days and are visible from at least x-ray to optical frequencies. The absence of world-spanning aurorae in historical records and of anomalous extinctions in the geological record i...
